He Gave me The Heisman

Any Clever Girl can give the Heisman- simply outstretch your right arm to keep someone from engaging you. It is a rude gesture, and works out better when telling a story so you can impart not only the fact you know what the Heisman is, but how to execute the pose immortalized on the trophy. "He was nice and everything but a little aggressive. I had to give him the Heisman about four times before the night was over."

This Clever Girl is very lucky to be hanging this weekend with the radio talent of ESPN Austin. Erin Hogan, Chip Brown, Sean Adams and Geoff Ketchum are in Dallas to revel in the Red River Shoot out festivities. The University of Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma University Sooners are already doing battle at the Cotton Bowl in Fairpark.

If you are local and don't want to brave the crowd at Fairpark- the huge video screens in Victory Park are featuring the TX/OU game and drawing fans from all parts. You can bring your own chairs and coolers and kick it in the sun.

OK, Clever Girls- not only is the Heisman race heating up, new names are emerging. The Heisam Trophy is the most coveted trophy in all of college sports. Since 1935 it has been awarded yearly to the best college football player. The first winner- in 1935 was Jay Berwanger and a Clever Girl would know the last five winners and where they are now- so ...

2008 Sam Bradford- returning quarterback with Oklahoma University
2007 Tim Tebo- returing quarterback for Florida
2006 Troy Smith- now an NFL (national football league) quarterback and wide receiver for the Baltimore Ravens
2005 Reggie Bush- is now lending his extraordinary running back skills to the New Orleans Saints of the NFL
2004 Matt Leinert- a current quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL

Some of you might recognize the names Reggie Bush and Matt Leinert for their particular interest in hollywoods party girls.

Now, we have some interesting scenarios taking shape with this race- coming into the 2009 season, there were four front runners for the Heisman-

For the first time in a long time, the hype given the Notre Dame quarterback is more than hype. A big win against USC today could solidify Jimmy Clausen as a viable candidtate for the Heisman and securing it would end the 22 year draught for Notre Dame.

Last years winner, Sam Bradford was looking good for a back to back Heisman Trophy win- the first since Archie Griffin of Ohio State University in 1974 and 1975- but injuries side lined him early in the season.

Tim Tebow, Florida's superstar will likley go down in history as the most celebrated and decorated football player in college football history if he is able to secure his second trophy.

Colt McCoy- the quiet leader of the University of Texas Longhorns was a finalist last year and despite his candidacy has thrown his support to best friend and wide receiver, Jordan Shipley- one of the names emerging recently.

If Jordan continues his impressive prouduction on special teams in addition to his performance at wide receiver, he will beecome a legitimate contender. A win for Shipley would make only the fourth time in Heisman history a wide reciever has claimed the coveted award.

The three wide recievers to lay claim to the Heisman are- Tim Brown, Desmond Howard and Johnny Rogers. All these wide receivers were highly productive on special teams (if you are tripping on the terminology- we will get to that next week).

The winningest schools in Heisman history are tied at seven- USC and Notre Dame.

It is my prediction the Golden Hat will change hands today- University of Texas is prepared to put up at win against OU. We will see.

  1. I just love it when you talk sports..... I need to find a woman with that avid an interest, or at least the willingness to learn. All you clever girls out there need to pay attention to what this clever girl is saying. By the way, just by virtue of his excellent name (and initials) Tim Tebow should walk away with trophy number two.....though the refs bailed him out today with some shady calls down the stretch. Keep up the good work and the great advice.

  2. TT-

And I just looove talking sports. Tim will likely snag number two and like I said- go down in history (for the foreseeable future) as the most decorated player in college football. He really seems to have it all, including luck with the refs.
I have to tell you- finding a Clever Girl who truly loves sports is not easy- perhaps you will find one who shares other of your interests- keep an open mind and realize- connecting is an intersection, you could find a Clever Girl who shares all of your leisure pursuits except sports- during which time she flutters about the kitchen and caters to your every whim (because she wants to). Now ... wouldn't that be just as nice?
    Thanks so much for reading-
I love your feedback and you truly inspired the Heisman tribute-

  3. hey Clever, I am not a sports guy per-say, that is i like to go to games,
i like to throw the ball around, & i even played several sports all through school. I don't just seem to have the time to watch it and frankly sometimes i get board. Its kind of embarrassing when my wife who is very Clever knows more about the pig skin or any other sports player or object than me. Is their a mans cheat sheet out there?
    Fumbling husband....

  4. Fumbling Husband-

I am your cheat sheet. Or, if you have an iPhone- sportacular is a free download. Check it in the bathroom or while you are refilling her drink. Be intentional. If she says- Heisman, use the phone. Look it up. Information is just a click away. My partner in crime- Alisa, used to act as my information center. If I needed information quickly, I would text her and she would look it up for me. If it means that much, do something about it. If it isn't honest, don't try. Intersect with you wife elsewhere. You must have some common interests. The point of Clever is to develop new interests- not to be disingenuous or false.
Oh, and by the way- allow her the space to exercise this fixation with others. Every girl needs a football season husband, if you can't be it- let her indulge. She undoubtedly comes home to you.

  5. Thank god for Google because I am fairly certain that NOBODY (even Clever girls or guys) would know who won the first Heisman...let alone what year it was initially awarded.

Wasn't Leon Hart (1948 winner) from Notre Dame also a wide receiver?

    Randy R.

  6. Randy-

Hey- what's Google got to do with it? All you need is Heisman.com to fact check, which is what I constantly encourage Clever Girls to do. Additionally, Leon Hart- while a great two way player- he is arguably the best all time end in the history of the game. So- no.

Thanks for brining to my attention he was the ONLY end to win! Got to love the Heisman.
